I am so excited you are here! I hope you find something to take with you in building your photography business, I believe in you.

Hello + Welcome!

As a wedding photographer, I’ve faced my fair share of challenges on the big day, and today I want to talk specifically bout the challenges with wedding flat Lay photography. In this blog post, I want to take you on a journey through the specific hurdles I’ve encountered in wedding flat lay photography and share the strategies I’ve developed to overcome them.

1. Time Management: The Ever-Present Challenge One of the constant battles in wedding flat lay photography is managing time effectively. While it’s a breeze to envision the perfect flat lay during the planning phase, the reality of a wedding day often throws unexpected curveballs. For me, the key has been allocating a dedicated hour in my timeline for flat lay setups. Having this time buffer allows me to handle both capturing and tidying up without feeling rushed. Sometimes, having an assistant to tackle the aftermath is a game-changer, freeing me up to focus on my primary photography duties.

2. Lighting Woes: Navigating the Shadows Lighting poses a significant challenge, and finding the right source can be a tricky task. Ideally, natural light near a window is my preference, but, of course, that spot is often sought after by others, like makeup artists. When shooting in a confined space, I’ve learned to move the setup away from the bride to maintain privacy. If natural window light is not available, I’m always prepared to take my flat lays outdoors. Investing in reliable video lights or softboxes has also been crucial for ensuring well-lit and visually appealing compositions, especially in dimly lit venues.

3. Lack of Essential Items: Working with What I Have Another common challenge is not having all the necessary items from the couple for the flat lay. Despite sending detailed emails and checklists, couples may overlook bringing specific elements, leaving me with limited options. In such situations, adapting and working with what’s available is crucial. I stick to my usual flat lay process, even if it means photographing just a pair of shoes. Consistency is key, allowing me to showcase my styling skills regardless of the quantity of items at hand.

4. Coordinating with Vendors: Navigating Planner Preferences Collaborating with wedding planners can be a delicate dance. Some prefer hands-on involvement in flat lay styling, while others prefer a hands-off approach. To avoid missteps, I make a point to communicate with the wedding planner beforehand. Offering to let them take the lead in styling ensures a cohesive vision. If I have a different approach in mind, I collaborate on additional flat lays after the planner has had their creative input. This ensures that everyone’s preferences are considered and reflected in the final gallery.

5. Missing Elements: Capturing Them Later Sometimes, essential elements for the flat lay might be missing during the initial setup. Whether it’s the groom’s ring or a sentimental item, adaptability is key. I’ve learned to capture those missing pieces later in the day, using a background resembling the original styling board. This ensures a seamless integration of these elements into the overall wedding gallery, maintaining a cohesive narrative.

Wedding flat lay photography indeed presents its unique set of challenges, but through strategic planning, effective communication, and adaptability, I’ve found ways to navigate these hurdles and create stunning compositions. By addressing time constraints, lighting issues, item shortages, vendor collaborations, and missing elements, I’ve elevated my flat lay game and delivered galleries that exceed expectations. I hope these insights and strategies prove valuable to you in your own photography journey.
